Contemporary Cycladic Architecture at its Finest
This residence celebrates its prominent location with uplifting, graceful arches that open out to the stunning Aegean views.
An extension of the wild landscape on Antiparos’ west coast, Ridge House appears to be coming out of a natural ridge to form a strong architectural statement. For the architects, the project’s greatest challenge was how to create a private residence on such a prominent location—but this problem soon became the property’s greatest asset. Ridge House jots out of the slope, anchored into the mountain by subterranean spaces and durable stone walls, and offers a series of living spaces oriented towards the sea. The residence is partially concealed from above by planted roofs, while the main public areas are located to the south of the main ridge line, offering maximum privacy from neighbouring viewpoints. The project comes from the inventive drawing boards of AREA, one of the most promising and talented Greek architecture firms.
Arches of Tradition and Imagination
A large retaining wall of local whitewashed stone follows the natural curve of the topography and leads from the parking area to the villa’s main entry points. This wall continues into the house as a smooth curving spine, separating all public areas from the subterranean auxiliary spaces and private quarters. Horizontal beams respond to the hill’s contour and help organise the residence’s interior, which unfolds as one, continuous space that is dramatically accentuated by arches. These parallel walls were inspired by traditional Aegean dwellings, and particularly the elongated, narrow living spaces with vertical window openings of Cycladic houses. The arching element continues outside, with one impressive arch framing the south view towards the pool area; the exterior spaces have been placed to the south of the property as to avoid the northern winds and the strong sunlight during sunset. A guesthouse is also positioned to the south, and follows the same principle in design and materials.
Ridge House is part of OLIAROS’ 2017 development phase on Antiparos, and our new Avlakia Masterplan.
